On Sunday, September 25, 2002, the OIL Youth Committee partnered with the TRCA (Toronto and Region Conservation Authority) and hosted an amazing tree planting event at the Indian Line Campground Restoration Site. This event was important given the current focus globally on climate change and the negative impact we are seeing on the environment. This gave us an opportunity as a community to do our part in a fulfilling way.

This event was also very important for us as it was our first in-person event, as our group began during the pandemic so, it was so nice to see everyone and make this collective effort.

Did you know that by planting trees you are contributing to the increase of oxygen and the absorption of pollutant gases such as nitrogen oxides, ozone, ammonia and sulfur dioxide? Trees not only purify the air but also provide shelter for wildlife. In fact, tree planting provides so many benefits to the Earth and to us. Moreover, we can’t forget that it is also our Islamic duty to be stewards/protectors of this planet that Allah has created and blessed us with.

We were thrilled that so many people came out to support this event even in the rain! When we arrived it started to drizzle a bit, but it was very refreshing and actually made the soil easier to dig. We planted a total of 120 native trees just in time before the big down pour! It was a soggy, but very fun day.

We want to thank everyone for coming out and supporting the OIL Youth Committee. This was just one of many initiatives we hope to plan, Insha’Allah, for our broader community, and we hope you will continue to come out and support us! We want to say a special thank you to the TRCA for being fantastic hosts, providing all the tools and giving us very clear guidance and safety instructions. It was a great experience!
